Libya's weather depends a great deal on geography. The desert climate of inland Libya varies greatly from the weather experienced along its Mediterranean coast.
If you are planning to head inland, the best time to visit is between October and April. It is also worth remembering that, whilst daytime temperatures are high in the desert, night-time temperatures can fall dramatically, so warm clothing is recommended for this time of the day.
Seasonal Variations
The western part of Libya experiences a desert climate where there is hardly any rain. Summers are dry and hot, with temperatures rising to a scorching 50°C / 122°F. Winters do tend to be cooler although, even so, they are still relatively mild. Winter daytime temperatures are around 15°C / 59°F. Freezing temperatures during the night are not uncommon. Visitors may also witness the 'ghibli', a hot desert wind that can appear in both winter and summer, giving rise to sandstorms.
The northern part of Libya typically enjoys a more temperate Mediterranean-type climate. Summer temperatures are hot, rising to around 30°C / 86°F, but are nowhere near as extreme as in the desert regions. Winters are typically quite cool. Indeed, temperatures are generally much cooler than those felt inland during the winter. This is also the time of year and location where you may find yourself caught in a rain shower.
